Encyclopaedia Britannica ends print publications

The Encyclopaedia Britannica will end print publication after 244 years and go "completely digital," the Chicago-based company said.
"The end of the print set is something we've foreseen for some time,"Jorge Cauz, president of Encyclopaedia Britannica, said in a statement.
"It's the latest step in our evolution from the print publisher we were, to the creator of digital learning products we are today."
The "coolly authoritative" reference books were coveted as a "goalpost for an aspirational middle class" who often paid for the multivolume sets in installments in the 1950's and 1960s, the New York Times wrote in glowing tribute to the end of era.
Sales peaked in 1990 when 120,000 sets were sold in the United States and dropped off precipitously as the Internet became the reference of choice for most Americans, with the huge growth of online reference site Wikipedia.
The gold-lettered books once sold by a "fleet" of door to door salesmen became a luxury item with a price tag of $1,395, the Times reported. Only 8,000 of the 12,000 collections printed for the 2010 edition were sold.
Britannica offered its first digital edition in 1981 for LexisNexis users, published the first multi-media CD in 1989 and the first encyclopedia on the Internet in 1994. It also expanded into the school curriculum market.
The online version -- which offers some services for free and charges an annual fee for enhanced content -- attracts an audience of 100 million people worldwide, Britannica said.

2012 LENTEN MESSAGE FROM THE APOSTOLIC ADMINISTRATOR

The season of Lent is a season of joy even if it is a season of penance. Penance must not be a gloomy sad spiritual exercise. As we look at our sins and our lives in need of conversion, our hearts also gaze on the loveliness of the Lord—rich in mercy, rich in love. He is the reason for our Lenten joy.

The Lenten season is a season to remember the faithfulness of God in spite of human treachery and infidelity. How is God’s fidelity shown?

God shows His faithfulness by forgiveness. His tender mercy is a proof of His faithfulness. In the same vein, people who are unforgiving are also unfaithful. Faithfulness and forgiveness are twins.

God shows His faithfulness by His humility. He saved us from sin and the first sin is pride. He has reversed the ancient curse of pride by stooping down at the Upper Room to wash our feet. The greatest is the one who stoops down to serve.

God shows His faithfulness by His courage. He will not withdraw from a good fight. He will not retreat in fear against Satan. He holds evil by its horns, wrestles against evil for our sake and shares His victory with us. Cowardice and unfaithfulness are twins. Faithfulness and courage are brothers.

As we continue to pray that the Holy See may send a new Bishop for San Fernando de La Union soon, let us make this period of vacancy as an opportunity for renewal in the faith and an occasion to deepen our faithfulness to the Lord and His Church. Let us make La Union a true Church of forgiveness and compassion; a true community of disciples steeped in humility and a real family of courageous fidelity to the Gospel values.

Let this season of grace be a season of celebrating faithfulness. His faithfulness is our reason for Lenten joy. His faithfulness is our challenge and mission.

From the Cathedral of Saint William the Hermit, San Fernando City, February 22, 2012

Message from:

Mrs. Agens C. Pimenetel Principal
****(Notre Dame Institute)****

Everyone deserves an opportunity to get an education and our mission is to provide Quality education to everyone that access for all students who come to our school. Our society as a whole benefits when students seize the opportunity for self-improvement. Since we served Aringay for more than 65 years, students and those who have come from nearby municipalities in the past several years joined a large number of people who have gone far because of this.

We are a relatively not so big institution, however, we are proud to say that we are progressive, innovative, and responsive. We are often among the first of our peer school to explore new methodologies and embrace new technology.

We encourage excellence and personal growth in not just our students, but in ourselves. I believe you will find our campus to be caring, safe and comfortable - just the right environment for the challenge of learning!
